There’s always a certain magic that surrounds MLB teams from the beginning of the 20th century. There is a captivating aura around those franchises that emerged during the MLB’s earliest days that is undeniable. Managed by Hall of Famer Jimmy Collins, the 1903 Boston Americans are one such team. The franchise that would later become the Boston Red Sox posted a record of 91-47 in only their third season, finishing first in the American League.

The 1903 campaign saw the legendary Cy Young lead the league in wins for the fifth and final time of his career. To add further mystique to the 1903 team, the Americans played in the first modern World Series against the National League champion Pittsburgh Pirates. The best-of-nine series saw the Americans charge back from a three games to one deficit, winning the final four gameswith influence from the Royal Rootersin a comeback that wouldn’t be repeated until the Washington Senators in the 1925 World Series. The win gave the new American League and the country proof that it could hold its own against the NL, garnering demand for future Fall Classics.

The offered Official American League William Harridge baseball bears signatures penned by three members of the 1903 World Series champions. Hall of Famer Cy Young’s signature in blue steel-tip fountain pen rests alone on the west panel. The east panel of the ball features “1903 Red Sox Champs,” in blue steel-tip fountain pen. Tom L. Hughes placed his blue steel-tip fountain pen signature and the inscription “1903 Champs,” on the east panel. Fred Parent placed his blue steel-tip fountain pen signature and the inscription “Red Sox 1901-1908,” on the south panel.
