The happy days captured here were brief and fleeting, but DiMaggio’s love for the tragic blonde bombshell stayed with him until his final moments, which came thirty-seven years after Monroe’s own passing. “I’ll finally get to see Marilyn,” the dying slugger whispered to his lawyer and confidante Morris Engelberg moments before drawing his last breath in 1999. Despite this lifelong devotion, or, more accurately, because of it, DiMaggio refused to sign anything related to Marilyn, so the appearance of his blue sharpie autograph here is particularly rare.
