This is an extremely rare piece, representing the first year MLB experimented with hosting a doubleheader of All-Star Games as part of an effort to boost the players’ pension fund. The first game took place on Tuesday, July 7, at Forbes Field in Pittsburgh, home of the Pittsburgh Pirates, with the National League winning 54. The second game was held on Monday, August 3, at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum in Los Angeles, home of the Los Angeles Dodgers, with the American League claiming a 53 victory to split the series.

This doubleheader experiment continued for four seasons, but the tradition of a single annual All-Star Game resumed in 1963.
